About This Quote

This city belongs to ghosts, to murderers, to sleepwalkers. Where are you, in what bed, in what dream? This poem by the Russian poet Nikolay Gumilyov is a chilling account of a town that has been abandoned by its residents and left to decay. In this poem, Gumilyov describes a town which was once bustling with merchants and workers, but now is largely deserted. The darkness all around is palpable as the people have abandoned their homes and businesses, leaving them for dead.
